Why Self-Help Doesn’t Help

Self-Help Doesn’t Help?

Look around and you’ll see millions of men and women desperately looking for happier lives. They’re in luck too, because a huge industry has sprung up to help. Thousands of gurus, books, and bloggers offer Miracles and success Secrets that can help us get what our hearts desire.

Sadly, it almost never works. Certainly temporary hope for a better life is offered. Fleeting inspiration from ancient wisdoms or happy ideas too. But even the sincerest, most enlightened gurus rarely lead anyone to the promised land. And here’s a curious thing. It’s not because these books or web-sites don’t contain tools that can help make our dreams come true. They do. What on earth can be wrong then? Good question. Before I tell you, I’d like to make up a little story. What’s going on in the self-help world right now is pretty much like this.

What’s Wrong Here?

Imagine you just bought the world’s best vacuum cleaner. This sucker is strong enough to pull nails out of boards. It’s self-powered, sprays fresh pine scent and even plays music!

But when you get it home, all it does is make noise. It won’t even remove bread crumbs from your carpet. What the heck? Back at the store they check it out. Works fine. At home again it won’t do a darn thing. What can possibly be wrong? Unknown to you, a little valve that makes it work is closed. Now what? You’d have a fabulous cleaner….if you knew about the valve. But you don’t….so you take it out by the shed….. and shoot it dead.

Self-Help Can be Fixed Too

Self-help is exactly like that. All the principles, mantras and inspiring ideas really can help you or I get everything our hearts desire. The trouble is, most of us have no idea what our hearts really want. Just like in the crazy vacuum story, something like a closed valve is keeping our very own heartfelt dreams from us. That’s why self-help doesn’t help. We can’t make our dreams come true if we don’t know what they are can we? No we can’t. But what the heck kind of “valve” could be keeping our hearts in prison? Fear of being judged.

To see how to get rid of it…….and why we haven’t been able to for many generations…. you’ll have to follow this blog. And? Set your dreams free, and something astonishing will happen. Suddenly you’ll have thousands of self-help tools to help make your authentic dreams real. It’ll be like waking up to find every kind of tool to build that deck of your dreams in your garage….where yesterday you had nothing but a rusty saw and headless hammer. Except all those self-help tools will let you build your dream life.

Don’t Believe You’ve Lost Your Dreams?

Chances are you’ve left your very own dreams behind somewhere, without even realizing it. Don’t believe a word of it? Here’s a simple test. Do you get up every day…..absolutely driven by passion….to carry out your Mission in life? Would you do the work you’re doing…..even if you didn’t get paid? No and no? I hate to tell you, but you’ve lost your very own authentic dreams. But don’t despair. You can get them back. Just follow the story.

If Self-Help Was Helped

Now I’d like you to stop and think for a moment. Imagine what an incredible thing it would be if the entire self-help industry was finally able to help. Hundreds of web-sites, gurus, courses and books would help who-knows-how-many people find what they’re looking for in life. A heartwarming fire of hope for better lives would be ignited.

If Not?

If we don’t help self-help help, our world will remain much like the little story below.

Imagine a modern Man lost in a desert and dying of thirst. Suddenly he comes upon a pipe going down into the sand, into oceans of life-giving water….with a tap on top. But, sadly, this Man has no idea what a tap is. He has no clue what a tap does or what it’s for. To this unfortunate soul, the faucet is nothing but a strange, silvery ornament. desert Even so, this fellow is in luck. On his laptop are many books about how to find water in the desert. Some teach the reader how to use crossed sticks to dowse for water. Others relate how elephants can smell water and dig it out of the sand. Still others discuss underground reservoirs and offer geographical tips on how to discover them. None mention faucets or hint of pipes tapping into unlimited water. Desperate for water, the Man tries several books out…to no avail. In plain sight of a faucet that could save his life….he dies of thirst.

Sadly, in today’s world we don’t realize fear of being judged is stopping us from seeing who we are and what to do with our lives. Like that tap above. Worse yet, a big billboard beside that tap in the story saying “TWIST THIS DOGGONE TAP FOR WATER” would probably make the guy dying of thirst howl with laughter….before he wandered off to expire. Scary maybe. But true.
